ill be moving into an apartment and my lease starts on the 1st of the month. I already paid for the whole month beforehand but i wont actually be able to move into the apartment until the second week. The girl who currently lives there in the room I will be taking will stay until I move in instead of moving out on the 1st which is when the lease ends for her. would it be wrong of me to ask her to pay me for the week shes staying past the lease? Technically i wont be able to move in anyways but I did pay for the whole month of rent which was 1600 😭 rent isnt cheap but i dont want to be an asshole and ask

@ilikeradishe i think unfortunately im gonna have to let it go :/ doesnt seem like she wants to pay, and kinda avoided the situation. Sucks but I would rather keep the peace. Especially since Im moving somewhere new and dont want drama with the other roommates

She isn't the person you should be asking, you should ask the landlord to prorate/reduce rent for the week you're not living there

Yeah I would ask the office. They should refund you the week you are not staying there. Or at least roll it over to next months rent payment. That’s not okay

@aurielle I already paid rent. Nothing the landlord will do now. Lease starts oct 1st so its on me. I was under the assumption she would be moved out by the 1st

@zzzstzzz you could ask the landlord to take it off your next month's rent. I mean you could've asked the girl to move out by the 1st because technically the place is yours then but I don't think you have any right to ask her for money. You're not the one renting out the place.

@aurielle totally understand that but nyc landlords dont care :( when you sign the lease, you still owe first first months rent regardless of when you sign. Just wish the girl told me earlier because maybe then we could have figured out a way to prorate the rent together

@zzzstzzz trust me I know, I've paid for entire months (sometimes 2) of rent before I could even move in just to secure the place.
