Birth control confuses me till this day, so I need some help! Last month I took my whole pack of bc and when I was on my break week I had unprotected sex (Friday). I was supposed to begin my new pack yesterday (Sunday), but I ran out of my bc refills and wasn’t able to get a new pack. Am I considered protected, or not? Thank you for any help 💜

It depends on when you will start your new pack. On the combined pill you’re allowed to miss one pill and remain protected, even if it’s the first one of the pack. But if you add another day of no pill you will be unprotected and any sex you had during the break won’t be covered either. Please get your refills on time, this is why it’s recommended to use condoms the first while as you get used to a routine. User error is the reason why pregnancy occurs while people are on the pill for.

If you extend your break week then sex during the break week is not protected.

@Yi_eune I know, but I just saw they sell some otc and I will purchase it today. Since I missed the Sunday and Monday pill, should I take both pills as soon as I get the new pack and then take my Tuesday pill tonight when I usually do. Or should I take two pills today and two pills tomorrow until I catch up?

Take yesterday’s missed pill when you get the new pack and continue on as normal after that. There’s no point taking Sunday’s pill now, it’s not going to change your protection status and may just lead to unwanted side effects. What pill are you on? If it has a 24 hour window and you take yesterday’s pill within that time frame then you will have only missed one pill (Sunday’s). Depending on the brand this may mean your protection hasn’t been affected.

@bluerose9 I’m on tri-sprintec! But today I’m just going to buy an otc I saw that they sell that isn’t the same brand. I basically had unprotected sex Friday night/Saturday morning, not sure if that makes a difference. 😞

If you missed your Sunday and Monday dosage any sex during your break week would be considered to now be unprotected. Your break weeks are only covered if you end them on time, even with the allowance of one missed pill. You can ovulate as soon as you become unprotected. Depending on where you are in the world you may still be able to get EllaOne emergency contraceptive (it’s too late for Plan B), but the later you take it the less effective it will be. Know that EllaOne will interfere with your birth control and make it ineffective for a few days, so read the instructions before taking it. If ovulation already occurred it won’t do anything. Either way you should take a pregnancy test in 21 days.
