Hi all, I’m a Canadian travelling to the United States in May and November. I’m taking a plane for one trip and then driving for another. With everything happening, I don’t feel safe travelling to the United States and wanted to see how other Canadians have felt travelling the last two months and with recent news about being detained. I’m feeling strongly against going.

As an American I recommend you don’t come. People are being turned away, their cellphones being taken away, or they’re being detained for having anything negative about t•ump on their phones. Even legal US citizens are having issues.

Not American or Canadian but imo, if you don’t have to go then don’t. You will for sure be stressed and anxious the entire time.

Hi I’m from Ontario and I was planning on driving through the states to go out east and have decided against that and have put a trip in the fall to the states off for the time being. The risk isn’t worth it right now andit’s better to be safe then sorry

My partner is going to the US next month and I am pretty nervous (we are from Canada). He has to go though, so I’ll be worried until he gets back home. I was going to go with him but I think it’s for the best that I stay back, I wouldn’t feel comfortable otherwise.

@falafels_ the suggestion now is that you take a burner phone instead of your actual phone.

@maeve_ are the odds of them going through it that high?? I’ll let him know but I don’t think he’d wanna go through the trouble, he’ll probably think it’s unlikely

It just depends on how willing you are to take the risk. I say a lot about t•ump so I wouldn’t risk it.

Is it actually this bad? I have a family trip to the us in June, from the uk? it’s a trip of a lifetime. Do I need to worry about this stuff? Or tell my parents?!

@hellok1tty I’m hearing mix things from people. My friend said her bf, her work colleagues, and other people she knew were fine and her bf went to Texas but I guess I’m just nervous cause of the news and online discussions. I’ve talked to a pilot, he also said things are fine from what he can see. I just don’t know. I’m a POC and one of my siblings is travelling alone separate from the rest of my family, so I’m nervous for them too.

I think the main risk is traveling if you have a U.S. visa. I’m a Canadian studying in the U.S. and have decided not to leave the country until I graduate considering how many people with student visas are being detained. A student at my college was taken by ICE yesterday for writing a political article. There are a lot of things they could come up with if I crossed the border - they could say my tattoos are gang signs, look through my phone for texts about Trump, say I did something wrong for my work authorization or student visa, etc. They have more ability to detain or deport people with US visas as these people are under U.S. jurisdiction. As of now I’d say if you are just a tourist it’s fine to travel to the U.S., but use a burner phone. The main issue will be entry to the U.S. because you have to go through American customs.

Adding on - use a burner phone AND make sure your social media is clear of politics or you have private accounts

@hellok1tty I’m hearing more and more stories like this that make me uneasy {-XbTfPNEj} Definitely worth taking into consideration as the US continues to create tension with countries that have been their biggest allies for decades. Multiple European countries have issued travel warnings for entering the US for trans and other LGBTQ+ people due to the issues with gender identity on passports
