Hi lovely people! just looking for some advice. Im 20 and i turn 21 in February I would like to start my driving lessons as i think it would allow me to have more freedom and go more places, a few people have also told me it would be good for me as i currently get the bus to work (i don’t work too far). I suffer from a little anxiety so thinking about this makes me anxious but i am interested in learning. Has anyone got any tips to overcome this anxious feeling? I know it’s not the end of the world for me to drive but a few people are saying I should xx

As cliche as it sounds practice makes perfect. The more you practice and get used to the car and being on the road the more confident and comfortable you will feel behind the wheel of the car. I definitely had the worst driving anxiety when starting out. I passed the written test easily. The road test was my kryptonite. I failed a bunch of times. The second to last time before I finally passed I got an almost from the road test person which was the worst word ever during that time. I literally paid for a bunch more lessons because I really just wanted to pass even though my driving instructor said that I didn’t need it. The test that I finally passed I thought I wasn’t going to because the road test person was the most intimidating person to be in the car with. He didn’t say anything to me other than giving me instructions. At the end of the exam still didn’t say a word just printed out a receipt which I thought meant I failed again. Then he said you passed. It was the greatest words to hear and a huge weight was lifted off of my shoulders. After lessons if you can have someone to take you out and let you practice as much as possible.

aw this helps thank you. It’s the starting them that’s makes my anxiety go up as i don’t even have a clue where to start about how to drive. Is it pretty easy when your anxiety stops ? x

no one has a clue about driving when they start haha. find a good instructor, i looked on facebook. they will explain everything to you and they’re very patient don’t worry. in terms of the theory test just download the dvsa apps they’re extremely helpful and just do as many mock tests as you can

@positive_vib Do your have anyone that would let you sit in their car and turn it on and keep it in park but just check where everything is/ make sure everything’s working well just to get a gist for it? My dad had me do this heaps before I actually started driving and then when I started driving, we would do it when we got home.

@Positive_Vib I still sometimes get anxious or nervous when driving sometimes. Especially when driving to a new location. It’s important to be vigilant about the other drivers as well. A lot of people don’t use their turn signals so need to be prepared to brake when necessary. If I’m driving to a familiar location then I’m not as anxious.
