Hi, I’m just wondering if I would be allowed to take birth control containing oestrogen if my dad has had a blood clot before? For context my dad had this blood clot in his 40s I believe, but it wasn’t down to genetics or anything, it was purely down to intravenous drug use. None of the progesterone only/non-hormonal contraceptives are a good choice for me. Mini pill - I’m rubbish at taking pills and I just couldn’t trust myself Injection - hate injections and I have brittle bones Implant - already had the implant for 3 years and the side effects were horrible IUD or IUS - i have been told due to my anatomy it could be extremely painful to have it inserted, and i’m already terrified of needles or any type of procedure My ideal contraception is the patch as I only have to think about that once a week but the nurse I spoke to said this wouldn’t be possible as my dad has had a blood clot before he was 45. Surely because my dad got it from drug use (like, it wasn’t a natural thing) this could be okay?

This probably needs a trigger warning for drug abuse. Did you tell the nurse the reason why he had a blood clot? I’m not a medical professional so I don’t know whether that still counts as family medical history for you (maybe that’s a sign he’s more prone than the average person so you would be too? Idk?) but blood clots are obviously very serious so maybe the nurse is just not taking any chances. Did the nurse suggest any other options for you?

@bluerose9 i’m really sorry, i completely forgot about the TW. my apologies yes i did mention it to her, and it didn’t seem to change her mind. i’m just feeling a bit out of luck. i loved the implant because i didn’t have to think about it but i just couldn’t put up with the side effects anymore. my next best option is the injection i think, i will have to just learn to get over my fear of needles. if not, the pill and i’ll also be using condoms in case i forget

@lolidk224 there is a new brand of mini pill called Slynd that has a 24 hour time frame and a break week like the combined pill, maybe ask if that’s available in your area

You could ask another doctor for a second opinion but when it comes to blood clots always follow a medical professional's advice

It doesn’t really sound like you are any more at risk than anyone else would be. I’d maybe talk to another doctor and get a second opinion
