Been on birth control for around 6 years (started on ridgevedon then had the implant and now on mercilon) I am 24 years old and my partner is 25 years old. We have recently brought our first house together and want to start trying for a baby soon. I finished off my strip of mercilon then had my break week. After this I was obviously due back on the pill (yesterday) but didn’t take it as I want to come off birth control. How quickly does birth control stop being effective and how quickly could I get pregnant? I’m hoping it doesn’t all happen to quickly but the fact I’ve been on birth control since the age of 18-24 then I’ve not taken it the last 2 days is a little scary😂

have you talked to your doctor about your plan and the fact that you’ve stopped taking your birth control? if not, then i think that booking an appointment should be your first move. from what i’ve heard, it usually takes at least a few months for your cycle to get back to normal.

I haven’t been to my doctor yet but I’ve spoken to a pharmacist and one of my friends who’s just had a baby and they all said there’s no real reason to tell a doctor you’re coming off birth control unless you feel necessary and need help with conceiving a baby so they can set out a plan for you, but at the moment I don’t feel that’s necessary as we’ve only just started trying. We just want to see if it happens naturally and just go with the flow. I know it can take up to 3 months for your cycle to get back to normal but I just wasn’t sure how quickly everything can move along.

You can begin ovulating again and get pregnant immediately after stopping the pill. On average it does take people a few months to get pregnant but it could happen right away, it's all a matter of chance. I think if you're trying you should be prepared for that possibility and see your doctor.

i see, that’s good you talked to your pharmacist. you said you hope it doesn’t happen too quickly, are you actively trying then or just waiting to see? if you’re not sure when you’ll be ovulating again and you don’t want to get pregnant right away, you can always use backup protection while getting used to the change. i hope all goes well :)

Well we’ve spoken about it and we’ve only tried once so far so I know it’s very unlikely to get pregnant after 1 occasion but you never know😂 only reason I say I don’t want it to happen too quickly is just because we’ve only lived in our new house just under 2 months so are still decorating, I know that doesn’t really matter and we’re nearly finished all the renovations anyway, but In my mind I just want to get the house fully decorated first☺️

It can be daily take up to a year for your cycle to be regulated again so there is no way to know when you’re ovulating and such. Sounds like a good idea to make sure the house is done and then I recommend seeing a doctor when you’re both 100% sure you want to start trying for a baby.

@Pen_whites_ in that case I would use condoms until you're sure you're ready because it could happen at any time

Generally doctors advise to wait until you’ve had at least one natural period off the pill before you start trying to conceive, as it makes it easier to predict the due date.

I also advise going to the doctor and just getting a general check up before you start trying x
