Hi I just wanted to get some advice. About 4 days ago I started getting this really dark brown discharge. I skipped my placebo week last month and I have 4 days till my next one. But it hasn’t stopped with that colour only today was it had red spots. Is this a normal colour. I have only experienced a light brown at the end of my periods before starting birth control but never had it this dark and so much of it.

That sounds like normal breakthrough bleeding to me, it can happen at random any time but is especially normal when you haven’t bled in a while. I get it like that sometimes, very dark brown. That just means it’s old blood, so it’s brown instead of red. It should stop after you’ve had a proper bleed on your placebo pills.

@jorts22 Thank you 🙏🏻 this is my first break through bleed and expected it to be like a normal period. But the old blood makes sense.

Irregular bleeding is a common side effect of the pill! Brown blood is normal on and off the pill, it’s just old oxidised blood (exposed to oxygen). Skipping break weeks can often lead to experiencing side effects like irregular bleeding unfortunately. Btw you do not have real natural periods on the pill, the pill completely stops periods. Any bleeding is a side effect of the pill, and can be anything from very very light spotting to very heavy bleeding, and light red to a very dark brown in colour.
