Trigger warning ⚠️ talking of weight/BMI I need to rant please. Before I get into it this is a trigger warning I will be taking about weight and BMI. Okay so I am 23 years old from Ontario Canada. I went from a breast size of 32B to a 38DDD/36G in a span of 4.5 years. The breasts are causing so much back pain, shoulder pain, mental distress it’s so frustrating I can’t handle the pain and weight. I went to my dr to get a referral to a plastic surgeon. In Ontario for those who don’t know you can qualify for a free breast reduction covered by something called “Ohip” this is like medical coverage here in Canada. The past month I’ve been declined a referral by 6 plastic surgeons bc they don’t want to do an OHip case - I get it and that’s okay. But this is where I need to rant. I won’t not consider myself to be overweight. But the plastic surgeons are asking for my BMI to see if I qualify. If you have a BMI over 30 I’ll be declined. Am I the only one who finds BMI the most dumbest thing to exist?? My BMI rn says I am overweight even tho I’m a size 6. I find this the most infuriating thing to exist. My breasts alone prob weight 20lbs total. The fact that they base it off a BMI is insane to me. Idk if I’m wrong here I would love to hear opinions on your thoughts on this. I understand plastic surgeons have the right to refuse a Ohip referral and that’s fine. It’s just I don’t understand why having a BMI of 31 will disqualify me even tho I am not overweight … idk if I’m the only one who thinks BMI is the most dumbest thing invented and the fact we’re still using it baffles me. I’m sorry for this rant and ramble but I just trust a lot of your opinions on here. I lastly want to add in that the criteria from Ohip does not take BMI into consideration they don’t care. It’s the plastic surgeons that turn you away if it’s higher than 30. Maybe someone from Ontario can education me a little more. Thank you I appreciate it if u made it this far lol.

That sounds so frustrating, I’m sorry. I also think BMI is really flawed, some use cases I understand for it as a very vague guideline or statistical measure, but using it to deny people treatment is crazy!! So many factors it doesn’t account for, and it was created by a mathematician with zero medical knowledge

@jorts22 THANK YOU YES!!! The bmi scale is SO FLAWED and needs to not be used. Yes I agree in some circumstances it should be used but not all. To turn me away bc I’m one over and they haven’t even seen me is ridiculous! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
