heyy, so i started the mini pill about a month ago now and i was curious to see what my next period would be like and if it would’ve changed at all due to the pill. So normally before the pill i’d get really bad cramps for about 30 mins then my period would start and now on the pill i had no pain at all so i wasn’t expecting it. I was actually getting a little nervous as i was hoping for the sign that i’m not pregnant. So yesterday i got my period but it’s not like normal, it was like very very light and not red. It was like the discharge you get like on the end of your period that’s brown if ykwim. And it was like that all day so i was hoping that was the sign i’m not pregnant and the pill has just made it a lot lighter and painless. And then today i wasn’t sure wether i would still be on as it was a really light first day and by the night there was barley anything but today it was a little bit heavier but nothing like my normal period and the “blood” still just looked like brown bloody discharge. Is this normal for the first period on the pill?

Yes. Ideally you don’t bleed at all on the mini pill but irregular bleeding is a very common side effect. Cramps are also a common side effect of the pill. As you’re now on a synthetic cycle and no longer get normal natural periods, any bleeding is not a “period”, it’s just breakthrough bleeding, a side effect of the pill. You are no longer “due” a bleed. Bleeding on the pill is not necessarily a sign that you’re not pregnant but not bleeding doesn’t automatically mean you’re pregnant either. So bleeding/not bleeding doesn’t really mean anything. Using the pill correctly and accounting for anything that decreases its effectiveness is how you know you’re not pregnant.
