Hi just wondering if you have birth control such as the pill or coil do you also use a condom during sex? Or do you just rely on your birth control method? I have increasingly been seeing things online (I know I should take everything with a pinch of salt) saying that they got pregnant on birth control and just to ease my anxiety I thought I’d ask as I just rely on my coil and my partner also does not pull out. I have the Kyleena IUD and use that method alone. People get pregnant while on birth control for various reasons. Most of the time it is due to personal error and people not knowing how the pill works. For example, many people aren’t aware that throwing up/having excessive diarrhea can have any impact on the effectiveness. There is also a rare genetic mutation that breaks down the hormones in birth control which would make it ineffective, but you would know very early on if that were the case!

You can use a barrier method if you want, but if your birth control method of choice is used or places correctly it’s perfectly viable as a standalone method. Pull out does not achieve anything, it’s not a protective method.

The coil is pretty much a foolproof method as there's no room for user error. You're completely protected from pregnancy with that alone. The only thing it does not protect from is STIs

Remember that stories online of people getting pregnant on birth control get posted, and the massive amount of people who don’t get pregnant aren’t posting about it! Me and my partner used the pill along with condoms for the first few months until we’d both had STI screening + I eventually felt comfortable using just birth control. It still made me a bit anxious the first couple times we went condomless, but now I don’t worry as I’ve gotten used to it and haven’t gotten pregnant.

Another thing to ease your mind, my boyfriend and I do not use condoms and haven’t for over 1 1/2 years and I’ve never gotten pregnant, this is because I’m a perfect user of my pill. People on social media that post about getting pregnant while on birth control were very likely not taking their pills correctly.
