Am I cleaning myself correctly? I never use any soap or “feminine wash” down there because I don’t want my PH balance thrown off. I understand water is enough to clean myself however I wanted to ask if I should let the water from my shower head wash my vaginal opening. My process in the shower is the following: I clean all parts of my vulva, labia, etc with water only and let water touch the entrance of my vagina as well. I’ll stick a finger inside and swirl it around but never use products. I understand the vagina is self cleaning but wouldn’t the smell of period, discharge, or even urine linger if I don’t let any water touch my vaginal entrance? Any input would be appreciated!

You're correct that the vagina is self-cleaning, and using just water is generally sufficient for cleaning the external parts, like the vulva and labia. Letting water touch the entrance of your vagina is fine, but it's important to avoid inserting anything inside, as that can disrupt the natural balance. Regarding odors, it's normal for there to be some natural scent from discharge or during your period, but if you’re concerned about lingering smells, you might consider rinsing the area more thoroughly with water. Just remember that everyone’s body is different, and as long as you’re not experiencing any irritation or unusual symptoms, it sounds like you’re on the right track! If you have any specific concerns or questions, it might be a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice. Hope this helps!

Hello! I used to do this before. I used to not use any kind of products in my vagina as I believed that water is enough UNTIL I had my very first vaginal infection. My OB strongly advised for me to use a feminine wash. BUT never use it inside the vagina. Water is fine, but feminine wash is used for better protection from any vaginal infections. Hope this helps!

^I think it’s fine to use an unscented wash letting it drip down/brush over your vulva, but I’d only use water to get between your labia & over your vagina. Don’t put fingers in your vagina as it’s introducing bacteria & pH changes. I used to work on intimate washes (within the scientific sector) and in my opinion they do not help prevent infections.
