Hi everyone! It’s been awhile… I need advice! TYSMIA!! TLDR: my dream job is teaching at a university, which is what I’m currently doing. The starting pay isn’t great, and it doesn’t seem like I’ll be up for a promotion in the near future. I received an offer for a better paying job at another college (NOT teaching). I’m hesitant to tell my current boss because he is trying his best to give me as many classes as possible, and I’m so grateful. However, it’s not financially good enough, unfortunately. How do I tell him I can no longer take classes due to a new position? I have been working at a university for about a year now as an adjunct faculty member. The pay obviously isn’t great, but it’s enough to pay the bills. However, my husband decided to go back to school, and he has supported me through my degrees, and now I want to do the same for him, which means getting a better paying job. I have applied to SO many jobs and finally heard back from a job at another college. This is a normal 8-5 job, so no longer teaching. I love teaching at the university but I want to make more money, especially with the rising costs of everything. Anyway, my boss has tried so many different ways to help me earn more money. Supposedly two faculty members were retiring this year, and it was implied that I’d be getting one of their positions… turns out, they’re not retiring after all, so I’m at the same pay rate. My boss tried to add more classes to my schedule, but even then, it’s not always a guarantee that the classes will make. Anyway, I feel bad telling him that I’m moving onto another position, especially after all this time and effort he has put into me and helping me! How do I tell him this? I know I shouldn’t feel bad because at the end of the day, I need to look out for me and my family, but I am so appreciative of him, and I want him to know that. I want him to know that it’s not personal, it’s just life… I’d greatly appreciate any help and advice. Thank you so much in advance!

Don't feel bad about leaving an adjunct position lol they are literally so exploitative and underpaying. In general, you never need to feel bad about telling your boss you're leaving for another job! It's a completely normal part of life and surely he knows you're not going to be at that job forever. Most normal bosses will not take it personally. Thank him for all his support, don't mention the bad pay as the specific reason your leaving, just say you got another opportunity.
