So I been taking my birth control for 3 weeks then I got my period so I stopped during that time. I had unprotected sex on my last day and started taking the pills the second day after. Am I still protected or should I be worried?

What do you mean you stopped ? Do you mean you took a break week? If you took a break week then you’re protected during that time as long as you’ve been taking your active pills as advised. You don’t get a period on the pill it’s breakthrough bleeding during active days and withdrawal bleeding during your break week.

You don’t have a period while on the pill since you no longer ovulate.

Was your break no longer than 7 days?

I was on my period for 4 days. So I didn’t take any of my active pills.

You can take a break up to 7 days so you’re protected. Again, it’s not a period on the pill it’s withdrawal bleeding when you’re on your break week :)

If you have bleeding on your active pill days do not stop the pill. Continue taking it as you would.

@Cabby_ so if I stopped taking it for 4 days because I was bleeding I am not protected?

The break was protected as long as you took at least 7 active pills before hand and you take 7 active pills after (assuming you are on a combined pill). If you are on a progesterone only pill you are unprotected. For future reference, take your pill as the pamphlet instructs, don’t start and stop unless it says to (ie. taking a seven day break after three weeks, if it tells you to). It’s also not a period, it’s a synthetic bleed. Hope that helps

A 4 day break is fine (and recommended over 7 days), as long as you took 7+ active pills correctly before
