TW: depression My boyfriend recently told me he needs to see a therapist and get medication bc he feels depressed. Has anyone dealt with a depressed boyfriend? I’ve noticed he stopped trying to plan and plans everything last minute or just “will worry about it later.” He is not so lovey dovey to me anymore and is kind of cold to me at times, especially if I’m upset at something. This started a couple months ago. It was very different before. It’s affecting me a bit because I get affected when patterns change. Do I give him space? What do I do, any advice?

Therapist here. He needs to be proactive with medication and having a consistent therapist. Making appointments and showing up. Otherwise, until he finds the right treatment creating low-energy consistent routines that can connect you two will be helpful. For example, having meals together or cuddling with a show.

Thank you @fLYaway4me . Why is it that depressed people don’t like to make plans and wait until last minute?

@Emotal Lack of motivation and energy are major symptoms. It is similar to when your physically sick and your body has to put so much energy into fighting your disease that it zaps your energy. When your depressed, the brain is taking so much energy to feel normal. Therefore you get these symptoms. I will give a disclaimer, if he does not get treatment this will not easily change. So if he is treatment resistant, ask yourself what you will tolerate. Irritability and coldness should not cross the line into disrespect or cruel treatment.
