Hi! It’s been a minute over here, but I come with a question regarding “periods” on the mini pill. I’ve been on Jencycla for over a year and a half and I usually have a bleed once a month. My cycle varies from 24 days to 32 days, and every month seem to be different. Currently, my last period was on September 5, 2025 and last intercourse on September 24, 2025. I know I shouldn’t be pregnant, but I still haven’t gotten my expected period. I’ve heard that the “period” I’m getting every month might not actually be one? That it is not necessarily tied to ovulation. Is that true? I was under the impression that because ovulation is only suppressed in 50% of women, and since I got bleeding, then that would mean I ovulated and I ended up with a period. If above is true, that would mean I’m not always ovulating even if I’m bleeding around the same time every month? *if you have a resource explaining this, please send it to me.

While I’m not completely sure on how that pill works with periods I do know that the ovulation thing is true and it’s similar to how the hormonal IUD’s only stop about like 20% or something like that from ovulating, but anyways as to the whole missed period thing, as long as you know for sure you shouldn’t be pregnant I wouldn’t worry as the mini pill can stop you from bleeding all together but it never hurts to take a pregnancy test in a couple of days if you still don’t get it

Ovulation is suppressed in about 50% of users on norethindrone mini pills. I’m not sure how you’d figure out if you’re still ovulating but regardless, what’s important whilst on the pill is that you use it correctly, not bleeding or lack thereof. Semi regular bleeding does not necessarily mean you’re ovulating, as irregular bleeding is a particularly common side effect on the mini pill. You are no longer “due” or “on time” or “late” for “periods” or any bleeding while on the pill. You may or may start bleeding at any time unfortunately. Or you may not bleed at all for months/years at a time. If you’re using it correctly it doesn’t matter if you bleed or not. One of the ways the pill works is by thinning the endometrial lining, so it’s possible that you could be ovulating and not getting regular periods as there’s not much lining to shed (ie bleeding). Bleeding or not bleeding is not a definite or reliable sign of anything related to pregnancy on the pill. A positive pregnancy test is the only way you’d definitely know for sure that you’re pregnant. So again that’s why using the pill correctly is important.
