Does anyone know why it is so expensive to cancel a gym membership? I was going to Golds Gym and they are slowly starting to open back up and I want to cancel my membership since quarantine I was able to order a lot of workout equipment off amazon so I don’t need to go to the gym anymore. They want $236 as a cancellation fee.. I don’t understand

you might want to read the fine print of your contract, it probably explains it there.

also this may need to be reposted with a TW

Maybe there was something written in the contract that you have to cancel ahead of time within a certain time frame or you will get a cancellation fee

There must have been something in your contract about this.

I really don’t understand why this needs a TW? @minajxo But yeah, that’s a lot of money to cancel, check your contract ASAP because that amount seems absurd?

Especially given current circumstances a lot of people are furloughed or unable to keep their job, so asking that much seems silly. They should be considering the ongoing issues and have a different opt out option.

TW: eating disorders and body image @ImTheOne i know a few people who struggle with mentions of gyms, it does hand in hand with their eating disorders and the way they view their bodies. it’s different for everyone though and no one on the forum might struggle with that, but i know my friends would. i understand though, if it weren’t for my friends i wouldn’t think that this would need a TW at all.

Usually such fees are when you try to cancel a contract (that’s meant to last a year or whatever length of time) double check your contract xx

You probably had a chance to cancel during quarantine since they were closed. A lot of gyms were letting people end early. Now it’ll be a lot harder as they have opened up. It’ll probably be cheaper to just stay on the membership.

TW mention of ED. I understand about body issues and also eating disorders @minajxo, having suffered with one myself, however I don’t see why a TW is needed for “gym”. You can’t TW everything sadly.

Also, I do not mean my last comment as anything offensive towards anybody!! But I just feel as though you cannot put a trigger warning on everything in life. If this post did talk about body image issues or weight etc then yes it’d need a TW, but it’s about the gym. If I went to a gym and wanted to talk about equipment/cost/clothing then would I need a TW? No. But if I was talking about the gym in relation to weight or fitness then yes.

@Imtheone I see your point and I agree I think the main point of TW is when something is graphic or going in debt about a topic. However, I do not see a point in a TW that says “gym” and then talks about working out at home and canceling a gym membership

@imtheone I agree it’s good having TW’s but sometimes it’s going a bit far, someone commented on my pic of brownies saying I needed one when it wasn’t a post anything to do about body issues/weight it was just showing what I baked lol cause I was proud😂

@Awg1 food images can be very triggering to people with ED. A TW doesn’t hurt anyone.

@nene16 I understand that it doesn’t hurt anybody (and I really don’t want OPs post to turn into an argument or debate), but I just think it’s taking it too far. You can’t be shielded from things forever. @awg1 them brownies looked so good 😍 your post was about something you made and we’re proud of and did not need a TW.

Guess what you don't get to tell other people what they are and aren't allowed to be triggered by

@ImTheOne Food talk is one of the required TW so I don’t think it’s expecting too much to add a TW to an image of food. @Awg1 That “someone” was me because images of food very often trigger people with ED, whether you agree with it or not☺️ I also don’t think it’s something to laugh about, triggers are dangerous to one’s mental health.

@nene16 I am aware that some may find a picture of food triggering however when we post a picture as a post the picture of the food is visible regardless of the fact that there is a TW; in that case wouldn’t it mean that to truly help avoid this being an issue the image should be posted inside the comments section? (Sorry this is just a thought that crossed my mind as I was reading the responses, you obviously don’t need to respond if you don’t feel like you want to xx)

@milkhoney Some gyms have a contract that you sign up for 12 months. If you cancel the membership before the 12 months, you’ll still have to pay for the months you have left.

@bluephoenix yes that’s what I would personally do and would really appreciate, but I understand that people won’t. It’s also just out of respect to add a TW even if it’s unavoidable sometimes :)

@nene16 I would never laugh about a TW or an eating disorder, as I stated I have suffered with one in the past and thankfully managed to move forward with the help of counselling and good friends and family. Please don’t take what I’ve said the wrong way. @aurielle I totally get that I cannot tell someone what they can or cannot be triggered by, however I really don’t get why somebody talking about cancelling a gym membership needs a TW? I’m more than happy to be educated on this.

@lumiere I would have cancelled but no one was at our gym to talk to over the phone to be able to cancel.

*TW for graphic descriptions of eating disorder behavior* @ImTheOne people with eating disorders may use the gym as punishment for eating or consuming calories. People may actually exercise to damaging or unhealthy extremes in order to burn off calories and lose weight. This one is actually pretty clear-cut and straightforward.

Really it surprises me the audacity of telling people they shouldn't be triggered by something and "it's going too far" especially when you yourself have suffered from an eating disorder in the past. Just because you don't understand it and it doesn't seem triggering to you personally doesn't mean you can dismiss and invalidate it for others. There was literally just a post about this.

You probably signed up on a contract. You have to buy it out or pay the fee. It sucks but they tend to make it obvious when you sign up.

I have a membership for golds gym too, on the website it stated that they were automatically freezing accounts during this time since they’re closed. You most likely have the membership that has a contract & if you try to leave before the the contract ends then you will need to pay cancellation fee which is a lot there /:

If you had a contract you probably were paying installments on a large sum and now you have to pay what's left
