I walk into my room today and was about to change until I notice my bathroom door was open a bit and I never leave it open. I open it and there is a maintenance guy inside my bathroom. I freak out obviously, and told him I didn’t put in a work order and he said “must’ve been your roommate.” I don’t have a roommate. I feel so uncomfortable because my bras and underwear were hung up in my bathroom. And I had no calls or emails saying there was going to be maintenance in and out of my dorm room. I call the front desk and they straight up tell me “there’s nothing you can do. Maintenance does that.” I feel sick knowing random men and women have keys to my room and can literally come and go as they please according to front desks!! i no longer feel safe living in a place I pay thousands of dollars for.

Make a police report. It is not okay for maintenance to go into your house without proper notice of at least 24. In some places 48 hour notice is required by law. Look into your state’s/countries laws regarding maintenance accessing your unit. Tell your family and friends. Unfortunately, this can be a dangerous scenario.

^I wish this applied to dorms and communal living situations but in my experience it doesn't. Maintenance workers came in and out of my on-campus apartment without notice, once they even locked me out of my bedroom while I was in the shower, no clothes phone or keys. As much as I don't agree with it I don't think you have the same tenants rights in dorms or shared living situations.

@aurielle yeah, I live on campus. There’s apparently nothing I can do. It’s so terrible though! I was very scared to see a random man in my room. They definitely should call or at least email when they come into your dorm unannounced. Especially on my campus there’s a lot of bad things that happen here.

@Pham200 I agree, giving you advance notice is the least they could do.

That’s so frustrating and a total violation of your privacy. It may make you feel safer to have a way to lock your door that they can’t bypass, at least when you’re in it. Amazon has door lock solutions for people who are traveling for like $15-$20 which might be a good option that way you can sleep and change clothes, etc and all of that without feeling like you will be barged in on.
