The only advice you should take about being on the pill for long periods of time is from your doctor. With that being said, Twitter and tik tok is filled with nothing but this nonsense. It’s best to just keep scrolling.

This is why I mute birth control on social media platforms, not reliable information anyway

Having a break increases the risk of blood cloth. But it is recommended to do a “liver-wash” after a few years to give your liver a little break. But it definitely isn’t recommended to go on a whole break

@michelle96 I never heard of this liver wash and I don’t see why this would be necessary ?

@mIchelle96 recommended by whom? You’ll need to give a source if you’re going to make statements like that.

@michelle96 What’s a liver wash? It doesn’t sound necessary

@Michelle96 can you give us a link to an article backed up by a medical professional as well as scientific research about this “wash”?

@michelle96 quick Google search pulls up a John Hopkins article debunking livee cleanses. No idea what it has to do with birth control either

People can do their own research but I believe it all comes down to systemic racism right? You can’t really research what you don’t know and if you heard something you might think it’s fact. I believe the same goes for birth control over all. The first place I got mine was in a clinic that was over worked and underfunded. So they just handed it me and I had to do all the research in figuring out any cons to it. Most recently I had an IUD placer last October and after the insertion they gave me a juice and a magazine to read until I felt better! I derailed but all I’m saying I personally believe it is linked to social injustices a lot of the time. Not always and yes some can figure out the answers themself but a lot of the time I think this wouldn’t happen if we just had proper education and funding in all communities.

^ I forgot to mention the first time I got an IUD it was at the same clinic and the person placing it I believe was still in training because he literally took over 15 minutes to place it in me.

Blood clots are a thing with birth control as you already know and are actually quite frequent. I myself actually started forming blood clots on marvelon

@bubbles3264 Yes, we know that birth control increases your risk of blood clots. However, the increased risk is small, and your body doesn’t need a ‘break’ from birth control. Stopping and starting pills actually increases your risk further

I saw this tweet this morning. Really worried me people shouldn’t be doing this! The comments were just filled with girls saying theyre not gonna go on that pill that apparently “causes” blood clots. So much misinformation.

I’ve seen many horror stories like this on social media which is reason why I stopped the pill and went to the copper iud.

@tibs actually it has everything to do with medications in general. All medications end up in the liver as it is the organ that has to deal with the absorbing of the pills. Any kind of pills. Is it recommended when you take a cronic medication. My doctor recommended it to me when I got to 5 years, it is not something you have to do, I was just worried cause in my pharmaceutical classes we talked about the stress the liver goes through after years of Chronic medications. So she said if I wanted to it was better to do it like this instead of stopping the pills. But it all goes down to the patient and the condition you’re in.

People should not say “go off the pill and restart to give yourself a break” it’s wrong. But let’s be honest, the pill has many side effects, blood clots, some research associate it with developing malignant tumors... but that’s all data! That’s why you have to see a doctor before starting the pill. They know your health state and your family history. They wouldn’t give you something that puts you in danger. In fact, if you have a high risk of developing blood clots the doctor advices you to take some other form of contraception. But it is important to do a check up on your liver based on what type of pill you’re taking. The side effects on the liver are more common in pills with high estrogen

I do not know enough about liver cleansing as they are “herbal” methods but I know that you should not take them without consulting your doctors. I should have not said anything about it since im not well informed. So sorry guys😊

@michelle96 That was a whole lot of words to say nothing lol. Yes it’s true that detoxes for your liver make some sense but there’s no evidence to say you should to do that with the pill.

@mICHelle96 There’s no reason to stop and start BC to give your liver a break. If this was necessary doctors would have to inform pill users about this, furthermore the Pharma companies would need to write this requirement in the pamphlet. I think that this idea of cleansing from the pill stems from the idea that BC is bad for you, when in fact stopping and starting it is in fact worse.

Twitter is the absolute worst for birth control fear mongering. I love this app bc of all the great stories people share about their experience with birth control.

@Awg1 since it’s herbal, there’ll never be indications from the FBA as it is not the job of the pharmaceutical industries to check out herbal products. And if someone (like me) takes more pills it is indicated to do a check up. If you’re only taking the BC then your liver should be strong enough to detox on your own. @bluephoenix I agree. In fact I said that stopping and starting again causes more problems. I was talking about something that was recommended to me (liver cleansing), absolutely didnt say to take a break from the pill to give your liver a break

@michelle96 what you’re saying now though is going against your point anyway, idk why you didn’t just say you were wrong instead of waffling trying to make yourself look clever to back up a point you know isn’t true anyway😂 idk why you’re telling me this info.

So, according to the NHS, a reliable resource, we do not need a “liver cleanse,” or “liver detox.” Thus, you do not need to stop taking the pill “to give your liver a break.” Who recommended this to you? @Michelle96 Here is the link of what I’ve read: {aZ336nx3B} I will be sharing an image of the paragraph I’m specifically talking about.

For those who can’t see the image above, this is what it says: Why don’t I need to 'detox'? You don’t need to 'detox' because there is no evidence that it does you any good. The human body gets rid of excess metabolites, excess food or alcohol in a number of ways using normal processes. Some of this occurs by excretion through the kidney, metabolism in the liver, and occasionally through sweat. Generally, this happens constantly. The British Dietetic Association said in January that “the idea of ‘detox’ is a load of nonsense”. It added that “there are no pills or specific drinks, patches or lotions that can do a magic job…for the vast majority of people, a sensible diet and regular physical activity really are the only ways to properly protect your health”.

Also, the NHS provides a paragraph (in the same link provided above) that says that a liver detox can actually be harmful. I will attach an image below. For those who can’t see the image, this is what it says: How could 'detox' be harmful? While most 'detox' products will do no more than harm your wallet, others, such as those that contain herbs, can potentially damage health. Herbal supplements can contain a variety of ingredients, many of which have not been tested for safety or for safe dosage levels. There is also a risk that herbal products may interact with medicines and make these less effective or too effective. For example, blood thinners (warfarin) and the contraceptive pill are both affected by some herbal medicines. Indirect harms are also possible. Some believe that the idea of ‘detox’ encourages people to take a more cavalier attitude towards their health, believing they can ‘detox away’ a period of unhealthy living, such as a week of heavy drinking. There are also the ‘lost opportunities’, where people put their faith in ‘detox’ rather than changing their long-term behaviour or using remedies that have been shown to improve their health, such as exercise and a good diet.

Yeah totally asked my pharmacist about this liver detox thing completely unnecessary as your liver detoxes itself and absolutely should never just stop birth control there no reason to take a break. The only prescription meds that can affect your liver is acetaminophen, which you’d have to be frequent daily user. So nope no one needs a liver cleanse from birth control.

@AWG1 Wasn’t trying to sound clever, I just said what my doctor said and what my professor said in class. Why would I say it if I knew it wasn’t true?!?! Im also here because im assuming the pill. Thank you @MizZY_ , Im going to present this to my professor to get some explanation about his statement

@michelle96 Yeah I would be concerned because my pharmacist who is very well knowledgeable in medication said it wasn’t true at all and not correct information.
