For those who live in nyc and have their license, I have the book & really want to get my license before this year ends but is it possible to pass just from studying from the book? I can’t take classes because that’s money I don’t have. Also, when studying from the book what are some ways I can actually study and retain the information so I can pass the test. Thanks again

Does anyone have a car in your family? Because reading the book doesn’t mean anything, you physically need to drive.

@allycat yeah they do, but I can’t use their car. Also if I literally can’t physically drive then wtf am I suppose to do I’m at a disadvantage

There is no way to pass a practical drivers test, let alone be a safe driver on the road (especially in NYC) without having significant experience driving. I didn’t feel fully comfortable behind the wheel until I had been practicing driving for quite a while, and you really shouldn’t be driving alone until you know what you’re doing. That’s the whole point of a learners permit. Ask around, see if any of your friends, your family, or even your friends family members would be willing to teach you to drive.

@schwa well that sucks and somehow doesn’t seem fair that I don’t have those advantages so I can’t get a drivers license but that’s whatever

@ufonora well then do you really need a license living in the city? You can get around by bus, train or taxi.

Sorry, by reading from the book I thought you had meant the written part of the test. Do you have your permit already? I know there are many people in the city who don’t find it necessary to have a license, but I can see your want for one. It really is best practice to get on the road yourself, as a book can’t teach you actual maneuvers and a feel for the road.

I’ll delete my above comment since I misread

@ufonora I’m not sure of your circumstances, but since you have a car in your family, is there anyway you could hop in with them when they go to the store or somewhere close to your house so you can get some driving practice? That’s how I learned to drive. I never had a permit

Licenses are proof that you are able to do the skill/s listed on them. Without having the experience needed you can’t have the license, especially since in the case of cars you would be putting your and others lives at risk by driving without the required skill! Getting your license is a great goal to have, but it requires more than just reading traffic laws. Maybe make smaller goals such as finding someone with access to a car that you could practice with first.

In NYC it’s required to have had some kind of Driving course. The written test is not all that important. It’s the actual road test that is. Also living in the city, I’d rather take the subway. Traffic is ridiculous, you really don’t need a car in the city.

^^ that’s what I was going to say. Aren’t you required to take a driver’s ed course with practical hours anyway?

Alrighty, well I just wanted my license just so I can feel accomplished about something before this year ends. I’ll ask my family to see if I can practice using their car and stuff. Thanks for the advice nonetheless💕
