Can someone explain why you are not protected if you miss a mini pill , but if you miss a combined pill you still are protected? I’ve seen this pop up a lot and just want to be educated as I am going on the mini pill soon and doctors don’t seem to tell you this stuff!

the combined pill stops ovulation and one day is not enough for ovulation to start up again. the mini pill doesn’t always stop ovulation, but it thickens the cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus. on the mini pill you’re protected after taking 2 pills and any sex before the missed pill is protected.

@nikeyxo so I could essentially get pregnant on the mini pill?

They have different modes of action, so the combined pill stops you ovulating whereas mini pills make it impossible for the egg and sperm to survive (correct me if I’m wrong). It takes 7+ days for ovulation to happen after stopping the combined pill which is why you’re allowed to miss 1 pill and stay protected as it’s not enough time for an egg to be released {50xNrjxyr}

@Awg1 does it stop me ovulating? Will this be something I will need to track then to ensure I don’t have condomless sex on the days of ovulation?

As @Awg1 said they work slightly differently but are both very effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly. The desogestrel mini pill prevents ovulation but the norethindrone mini pill only prevents ovulation in about 50% of users I believe, even so it is still very effective when used correctly and you would not have to track ovulation or use other protection methods around that time.

“The mini pill works by thickening the fluid around the cervix (opening to the uterus or womb). This helps to prevent the sperm from entering”

@bluerose9 do you know what the differences are in the desogesterel mini pill and the norethindrone pill because I’ve just seen on the nhs that one of them stops ovulation but what is the difference in the pill then?

@blessedxo_ The ones which contain desogestrel stop ovulation, but even the ones that don’t stop ovulation you wouldn’t need to track your cycle as they stop the sperm/egg being able to survive anyway so you wouldn’t get. I suggest reading the link I posted as that has lots of info on about combined and mini pills x

@Awg1 thank you. I completely get that but for my peace of mind and anxiety, I think I would cope better mentally knowing that I’m not ovulating. I will suggest the desogesterel pill to my doctor and see what she says. X

Most doctors prescribe the newer desogestrel pills anyway. As long as you just take it everyday within 12 hours you’ll be fine.

I’d really recommend reading through this whole pdf {r9mJTjx5p} it’s literally has all the information you need to know about the mini pill
