Hi, just wondering if anyone on here has ever tried any contraception that isn’t the pill, e.g. the implant or the coil. I’ve been taking the pill for 2 years and want to try something different as I keep forgetting to take my pill. Any advice or information about personal experience is welcome

Having an IUD is easier, but definitely more expensive. I think it’s around $300 in Canada. Theres a 1/3 chance you won’t have your period while it’s inside you. But there’s also a chance it can get dislodged while sex, and harm your body

Thank you, I live in England so price isn’t really an issue because of the NHS, but I am concerned about pain and potential dislodging.

I only know about the dislodging because my best friend has had one for about 3 years. She went to the doctor because of pains, and turns out it was pushed to the right too far, where it almost couldn’t be reached to take out. I’m not sure what the odds of this happening is though

@Star1 dislodging is incredibly rare. The pain isn't great but it doesn't last long! It's actually just like bad crampy period pain and it's over within 2 minutes. Cramping is likely for a couple of days after, but beyond that it should be fine. You can relieve it with painkillers, a hot water bottle and rest. It's worth it for years of worry free protection!

Thank you @jyzn22. Do you know if you still get periods with the IUD? When I wasn’t on the pill my periods were quite heavy and frequent and I have read that in some cases it can make them worse

I got an IUD back in May and I love it. My doctor numbed my cervix so the initial insertion wasn’t too bad but I had the worst cramps of my life for the rest of the day. I got the copper iud which is non hormonal so I still have periods

@Star1 you still have periods with the copper IUD and with this one it is likely to get worse in terms of heavy bleeding and cramps. However, the hormonal IUD (mirena, jaydess, skyla) is more likely to lighten bleeds and can eventually stop your bleeds. Sounds like hormonal would be better for you than the copper one.
