I have a UTI, I’ve never had one before, I drank 1L of cranberry juice and loads of water yesterday, but it’s still here and now i have this weird discomfort on my right side at the bottom of my ribs. Should I get cystitis treatment from the pharmacy as it’s been 2 days now?

You need to get antibiotics from a doctor. That’s the only thing that can get rid of a UTI.

I put in for a prescription, is the pain on my side anything to worry about or will the antibiotics help that?

Get antibiotics, if you’re in the UK call 111 and go that way, I got a same day prescription through there because my Gp didn’t have appts

@Pumpkinxx It sounds like it could’ve reached your kidneys… I’d see a doctor ASAP

Get some cystitis relief sachets to help with symptoms until you get pills tomorrow, use a hot water bottle on your belly to try and ease the pain a bit. It does sound as if it’s probably gone to your kidneys so good that you’ve got the antibiotics sorted!

Pain has gotten almost unbearable, called an ambulance and they said they will be here within 20 hours

Yes they said to take some painkillers in the meantime, ambulances are only fast for life threatening emergencies and so it can take up to 20 hours to be dispatched

The uti sounds like it’s in your kidney. I had a bad one when I was young. I didn’t know anything about it until I get really sick and when to hospital over night on iv. It was a uti and my kidney was badly infected. It was so painful. You should get it looked at. You never know what it could be.

@Pumpkinxx can you go to the emergency room yourself?

The ambulance came a couple hours ago and checked me out, said it was my kidney and I’ve been prescribed cefalexin for it now, just gotta wait for it to do it’s magic

Do you not have to go in for treatment? Since it got to your kidneys you would usually require medical care and supervision

Also for future reference for you and whoever is reading this, the moment you experience a UTI you need to go to the doctor to get antibiotics. A kidney infection is dangerous.

Will do. Why is it that for most people it clears up on its own after a day or two if antibiotics are needed?

UTI’s can’t usually clear up on their own. They usually get really serious if left untreated and can become a kidney infection, which is really serious and is the pain that you were feeling. If you get more than 3 UTI’s in a year then you need to see a urologist.

@Pumpkinxx if it's a very mild infection it can clear on its own but if you have it for more than a few days it really does need to be treated before it gets more serious
