Attention anxious drivers! 🚙 I used to have a post on here that was many of you reassuring me about learning to drive (with anxiety). I would always go back and read the comments but after MyPill had data issues, it’s gone. So. Any advice whatsoever for someone who is anxious to even BEGIN learning to drive? Were you anxious but then fine once you started learning? What parts were you anxious about and are you good at that now? Etc etc.

I passed over a year ago and I’m still an anxious driver, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The only way to get over it is to keep driving and not avoid it. Then, the more confidence you’ll pick up. Need to take my own advice 😂

practice practice practice!! nothing makes you feel more comfortable than to just keep practicing. after a while, it becomes muscle memory & you don’t really think much about what you’re doing. there are still moments i get anxious (during bad traffic or rush hour), but feeling confident in your ability to successfully drive helps!

I don’t think I felt fully confident driving until I got my license and started driving alone. Remember that you don’t have to take the quickest route to your destination if there are certain busy streets/highways that you want to avoid!

One thing that helped me a lot was avoiding the highway. When I got my license my dad wouldn’t allow me to drive on the highway, he wanted me to start out driving in town, because he always said that at least if I get in an accident it would be a fender bender and nobody would get hurt because it would be so low speed. As usual, my dad was totally right. About 7/8 months after I got my license I got into an accident where I was totally 100% at fault. But since it was in town at an intersection we were both only going like 15-20mph so nobody was hurt. If that had happened on the highway going 55-65, it would’ve been bad. So I highly recommend getting comfortable driving on slower roads before driving on the highway without a more experienced driver. Also, you can always practice at night or when there isn’t much traffic. My friend used to practice parking and driving a manual car in the mall parking lot when it was closed.

whenever i get too hot in my car i get really anxious and cant seem to focus on driving... the only time i ever have the heat on in the car is during the winter.. also if i don’t know where i’m going or don’t have a gps and just have someone giving me directions i get so stressed and ask about a million times “just keep going straight?” or “so uh i don’t know where i’m going”.. my best advice is to relax and make sure your seat is in a comfortable position so that you can drive comfortably and focus on the road rather than trying to fix your seat etc.
